It is possible that the little girl numbered 31 was me. Much depends upon which year and when during the year. If the year was between 1952 and the summer of 1953 then it probably was.

My parents and I lived on Bircham-Newton Road, next door to the Buckenhams. Dad (William [Bill] Reeves) worked as a herdsman for Major Ralli for a few years, from April 1948-January 1950 then again from December 1950 to some time in 1953.

When we first lived in Stanhoe the cottages had no water supply nor any electricity (of course). The second time around I know that electric light, at least, had been laid on; the water situation remained the same. Mum had to do the washing in the "copper" in the wash house and that was where the water for our weekly baths was boiled. How much I must have smelt then! One set of underwear per week (one in the wash; one on); weekly bath and hair wash; infrequent teeth cleaning. The poor teacher!

I bet this car had been to most of the Weddings in the district and could tell some stories - What the chauffer couldn't see (but could always hear.... on the way to the reception)!

The description of Tom's working clothes is very evocative of the era.

I remember my father, Cyril Brown, in similar work-wear, always with a flat cap.

Philip Wright was my Gt gt grandfather, father to Susanna who married John Samuel Green, whose father, john Green was also a farmer of Stanhoe. The Green farm was at the other end of Lynn Road, possibly church farm? thank you for these photos, a lovely surprise.

Joseph and his brother Philip were nephews of my 5 x g-grandfather Robert Wright. Robert married Eleanor Crowe in Cockley Cley and they had 8 children all born in Stanhoe. I was thrilled to see these photos, thank you!

The black Morris 8, Reg: "GAH29" belonged to my grandfather Thomas Henry Calver of Station Farm, Stanhoe. (After his death in 1957, Grandfather's car was handed on to my cousin Richard Calver). If all goes to plan, an aerial photo of Station Farm (taken about 1954) soon to be published on this website shows the same car parked in front of his garage on the farm.
